These coils are constructed with tubes that are usually plastic, and an antifreeze solution flows through the coils to exchange heat with the refrigerant housed in the heat pump. Generally, HVAC contractors will size the geothermal system to accommodate between 95 and 98 percent of the heating load in northern locations.

In addition, the life span of a geothermal system is approximately 25 years, which exceeds the life span of an air source heat pump by over a decade. Based on estimates, these loops can last for 50 years or even more.
